Bull City Vegan Challenge Week 1: What a start!

Bull City Vegan Challenge Week 1: What a start!

April 1 wasn’t April Fool’s day for those of us wanting to eat plant-based meals at Durham restaurants. After salivating over photos of challenge dishes on our website taken by our excellent volunteer photographer Dragana Lassiter, we were all asking “Which meal should we enjoy first?”

Our team of volunteers really enjoyed looking over your challenge photos. Keep sharing on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for more chances to win and make sure to use both of our hashtags #planetprotein and #BCVC2016.

@katie_todd tweeted this delectable looking shot of the sticky toffee pudding from the Parlour

@candacemixmix from Instagram says “save a crawdad, eat the vegan chowder” at Saltbox Seafood Joint

Meatless Monday proclaimed all of April by City of Durham in honor of Challenge
On Monday, April 4th, the City of Durham proclaimed April as Meatless Monday Month in honor of the Bull City Vegan Challenge, a great accomplishment for our Community Partners at Triangle Meatless Mondays.

Meatless Proclamation

Leeanne with the Proclamation!

As part of the Challenge, we invited the public to try vegan for April.  It’s never too late!  Message us if you’d like to try it and we will connect you with a mentor through the Piedmont Farm Animal Refuge.  We are excited to report that  20 people around the Triangle pledged to go vegan for the month of April.  Our Challenge pledges are meeting at the Durham Co-op on Monday between 5-8 if you’d like to welcome them.

Lisa Robinson Bailey shared this pic from Durham Co-op on Facebook. Whoa, that looks good!

Hope to see lots of you at our upcoming events!

  • All Month: Dine at the 15 participating restaurants throughout April and order the Challenge dish: Don’t forget to VOTE.
  • Prizes: each week we will announce new prizes and how to win!
  • Saturday April 9: Want some delicious free samples?  Visit us at the Durham Farmers’ Market from 9:30 am-12pm ‪as Chef  Xavier Pino cooks you up some #planetprotein themed samples including Delight Soy, Tempeh Girl, & Beyond Meat!  Big thank-yous to all of these companies for donating their product to us!
  • Friday April 8: Full Frame, one of the largest documentary festivals in the country, isn’t an official Bull City Vegan event, but we are definitely interested in the documentary “Unlocking the Cage” at 1:30pm, Carolina Theater:

The response shows, our challenge dishes sell!

Durhamites are flooding our participating restaurants with orders for challenge dishes. Monuts had to continually rotate in fresh batches to keep up with the demand for their vegan donuts. Dos Perros, Rise, Beyù Caffè and Parts & Labor all temporarily sold out of their dishes a few day into the challenge.

Area restaurants temporarily sold out of the Bull City Vegan Challenge dishes in the first week!

In fact, Rise reported that their vegan sausage biscuit was their best-selling special ever!

Insta user @talisa3636 shared “the biscuit itself was absolutely amazing. Then add the sausage and jam… Yum”

Prizes – keep watching our @bullcityvegan on twitter/insta/facebook to stay up-to-date on all the ways to win

Big congrats to this week’s challenge winners. Nick Swanson was the first to share a photo from the challenge with our hashtags #planetprotein and #BCVC2016 with a drool-worthy shot of the maple bourbon facon bacon doughnut from Monuts.

Our winner of the YMCA one month is instagram user “xbeardx”.  Why? We thought their pic of RISE biscuits before a hike on the Eno made us feel excited to get up and #planetprotein the day.  The light of the morning was the perfect pair to a delicious biscuit.

We decided to give out one more prize this week, and it was to Facebook poster Jill Trufant. Jill’s kids were so happy to join in the vegan fun. They’ll enjoy coupons for Daiya Cheese and Organic Girl Salads!

The Challenge in the news

We’re so proud of volunteer Kaitlin Grady who joined Beyù Chef Destiny on My Carolina Talk on WNCN on April 6 to discuss the challenge. We also got some great press from Indy Week, News & Observer, Durham Magazine, popular vegan websites Veg News and Ecorazzi, and many other items around the web.
